Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When scanning the iSCSI HBA, the Equalogic iSCSI presented LUNs do not appear
  • In the vmkernel.log file, you see entries similar to:

    vm2 vmkernel: 0:00:49:27.506 cpu2:4284)WARNING: iscsi_vmk: iscsivmk_ConnReceiveAtomic: Conn [CID: 0 L: 10.0.30.50:52227 R: 10.0.30.12:3260]

  • In the vodb.log file of ESXi 5.1 hosts, you see entries similar to:

[iscsiCorrelator] 384199949us: [vob.iscsi.target.login.error] vmhba38 @ vmk1 failed to login to iqn.2001-05.com.equallogic:0-1cb196-6bad81626-ac10ff0d4ca51644-mgvna3 because the target returned a login status of 0202

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware ESX Server 3.5.x
VMware ESX 4.1.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution

This error in the vmkwarning.log file indicates that the storage array has closed the connection:

Failed to receive data: Connection closed by peer

To resolve this issue, ensure that Enable shared access is selected in the Equalogic iSCSI configuration.
Note: You must do this to enable all of the advanced vSphere capabilities that rely on the shared storage.

To ensure that Enable shared access is selected in the Equalogic iSCSI configuration:
  1. Select the volume
  2. Click Modify Settings.
  3. On the Advanced tab, select Allow simultaneous connections from initiators with different IQN names.
