Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Upgrading to vCenter Server 6.0 fails, you see an error similar to:
Error: Unsupported database driver: c:\Windows\System32\sqlncli.dll Resolution: Verify you're using vCenter Server with supported driver.
 
  • When upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5 or earlier versions, you may see the warning:

    DSN is pointing to a unsupported ODBC driver


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x

Cause

This issue occurs if the ODBC connection is using an outdated SQL Native Client.

Resolution

To resolve the Unsupported database driver sqlncli.dll issue in vCenter Server, ensure that following ODBC drivers and clients are used when connecting to databases.
