Issue/Introduction

When you connect VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client to VirtualCenter, vCenter Server, or ESX hosts, the IP addresses or hostnames are cached on your computer and are listed under the IP address / Name dropdown menu each time you start VI Client. In a large environment, this list can be quite long.
This article provides instructions to clean up this list.

Resolution

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 136393.

To clean up or clear this cache, use regedit to access the Windows registry on your computer:

Warning: The steps outlined here are potentially hazardous for your environment if they are not followed exactly. If you are not comfortable performing these steps, contact VMware Technical Support and work with them to resolve the issue.
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Browse to the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VMware\VMware Infrastructure Client\Preferences
  3. Right-click on Recent Connections and choose Modify.
  4. Edit the Value data as desired to remove or re-order entries.
