Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • CPU usage on the host briefly spikes to 100% across all CPUs
  • An error message appears in the Event Log on the host:

    Event ID: 100
    Source: vmauthd
    Malformed perfmon object, index=5

Resolution

This issue can occur when the data list for the performance counters installed by VMware Workstation are corrupted.
 
To resolve this issue, rebuild the performance counters list on the host. For instructions, see one of these articles from Microsoft:
