Installing VMware Tools generates a general system error

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Migrating a Windows 2000 professional virtual machine from ESX 3.0.2 host to ESX 3.5 host.
  • Trying to Install VMware Tools in a guest operating system generates the following error:

    A general system error occurred

install-vmware-tools-fails vmware-tools-install-doesnot-complete install-vmware-tools-windows

Resolution

The A general system error occurred: Internal error message is very generic and does not reveal the actual problem.
For basic troubleshooting of this error, ensure:
  • The virtual machine has CD-ROM configured.
  • The windows.iso is is available within the /vmimages/tools-iso/ folder of the ESX host.
  • The virtual machine is powered on.
  • The correct guest operating system selected. For example, if the guest operating system is Windows 2000, ensure you have chosen Windows 2000 and not Other.
