Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance to 6.7 with an uninstalled external windows vSphere Update Manager fails with:
The source vCenter Server instance is configured with an external vSphere® Update Manager for Windows. To proceed with the migration/upgrade, run the Migration Assistance on the Update Manager Windows instance, then click Next. The Migration Assistant is located on the vCenter Server Appliance ISO.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.7.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs because the vSphere Update Manager extension registration is still available in vCenter Server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue,
  1. Remove the vSphere Update Manager extension using mob if needed. For more information, see Cannot remove or disable unwanted plug-ins from vCenter Server and vCenter Server Appliance (1025360).
  2. Re-attempt the upgrade.
