Bare Metal Edge ISO installation fails with the error: "Select and install software - Installation step failed"

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Edge ISO installation fails hence no Operating System gets installed on the Bare Metal server.
  • You see the error similar to:

    Select and install software - Installation step failed

    An installation step failed. you can try to run the failing item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software <Continue>



Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.x
VMware NSX-T Data Center

Cause

This issue occurs because the logical volumes on the Bare Metal server are in use and needs to be deleted manually before the new Edge ISO installation can move forward.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.4.0.

Currently, there is no resolution.

Workaround:
To work around this issue, upon receiving the installation error:
  1. Select option Continue.
  2. From the list of options, choose option "go to shell" within the Installation UI.
  3. Once in the shell, run these commands to remove the existing LVM data:

    vgdisplay to view the volume group names in use.
    swapoff -a to turn off swap.
    vgremove <lvm-data-to-remove>. Say y to all the questions.
    vgdisplay again to verify logical volume name is no longer present.
     
  4. Reboot and initiate install of the Edge ISO again.
