Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When upgrading from vCenter Server Appliance 5.x to vSphere 6.0, you experience these symptoms:
  • When connecting to the source vCenter Server Appliance, the HTML5 deployment wizard reports:
vCenterServer FQDN Source_vCenter_Server_Appliance_FQDN does not match DNS servers "localhost.localdom,localhost" and IP addresses "Source_vCenter_Server_Appliance_IP_Address" from VC Certificate

Examine the VC certificate and make sure it is valid and point to vCenterServer FQDN
  • Certificates presented on ports 443, 5480, or 9443 report a certificate containing:
CN=localhost.localdom
  • Reviewing the SSL certificate for the source vCenter Server certificate, the Subject Alternate Name (SAN) field contains:
DNS=localhost.localdom, DNS=localhost, IP=Source_vCenter_Server_Appliance_IP_Address

Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.0

Cause

This issue occurs due to deployment of the vCenter Server Appliance in vSphere 5.x using the default certificates which were generated at first boot. These certificates do not reflect what is stored in the DNS Server of the environment.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, toggle the certificate settings on the source vCenter Server Appliance to regenerate new certificates with the appropriate hostname and IP address.

To toggle the certificate settings:
  1. Log in to the source vCenter Server Appliance Web interface at https://Source_vCenter_Server_Appliance_FQDN:5480/
  2. Click the Admin tab.
  3. Regenerate certificates:

    • vCenter Server 5.1: Select Toggle certificate setting so that the Certificate regeneration enabled displays Yes.
    • vCenter Server 5.5: Select Yes under Certificate regeneration enabled.

  4. Click Submit.
  5. Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance.
  6. After the vCenter Server Appliance reboots, ensure that the Certificate regeneration enabled option is set to disabled and disable if it is enabled.
After completing, attempt to upgrade the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x to vSphere 6.0.
