Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on installing tcpdump on the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA).

Notes:
  • For security reasons the tcpdump rpm package on vCenter Server Appliance is uninstalled.
  • There are situations where the tcpdump rpm package is required for troubleshooting.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.0.x

Resolution

To install tcpdump on vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA):
  1. Open an SSH session or console to your vCenter Server Appliance.
  2. Install the tcpdump rpm package by running this command:

    In VCSA 5.5:

    /etc/gss-support/install.sh

    or

    sh /etc/gss-support/install.sh

    In VCSA 6.0:

    /etc/vmware/gss-support/install.sh

    or

    sh /etc/vmware/gss-support/install.sh

  3. Use the installed tcpdump rpm package for troubleshooting.

  4. After troubleshooting, uninstall the tcpdump rpm package by running this command:

    In VCSA 5.5:

    /etc/gss-support/uninstall.sh

    or

    sh /etc/gss-support/uninstall.sh

    In VCSA 6.0:

    /etc/vmware/gss-support/uninstall.sh

    or

    sh /etc/vmware/gss-support/uninstall.sh

In the VCSA 6.0 appliance, the path to these files is slightly different. You can find install.sh and uninstall.sh in the /etc/vmware/gss-support directory.

Additional Information

To verify if the tcpdump rpm package is uninstalled:
rpm -q tcpdump

Usage of the command in VCSA 5.5 and 6.0:

tcpdump -i interfacename -w filename
tcpdump -i eth0 -w /tmp/wirecapture.pcap
