Issue/Introduction

This article provides the steps to change the name of a VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS) in production when virtual machines are connected.

Notes:
  • Changing the name of the VMware vDS from vCenter Server does not disconnect virtual machines.
  • vCenter Server pushes the updated information to the ESXi/ESX hosts connected to the vDS without causing an outage.
  • This article does not apply to any third-party distributed virtual switch and vSphere Standard Switches.
