Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Installation of ESXi 5.x fails on a new USB flash drive, SD flash card, or local disk.

  • You see an error message similar to:

    vmkfstools failed with message: Device path name
    "/vmfs/devices/disk/mpx.vmhba1:C0:T0:L0:8" is not a valid absolute or relative path
    Failed to resolve device name path
    /vmfs/devices/disk/mpx.vmhbal:C0:T0:L0:8

    Error: no such file or directory



Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1

Cause

This issue occurs when the disk is corrupted or the RAID group is not set correctly.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  • If you are attempting installation on a new USB flash drive or SD flash card, reset or replace the drive or card.

  • If you are attempting installation on local storage, recreate the RAID group and run the installation again.

    Note: Please consult your hardware vendor to troubleshoot the backend disk or disk group.
