"Adapter type doesn't match the disk type" Error Message

Details

The following error can occur when you add a hard drive to a virtual machine:

Adapter type doesn't match the disk type (for example, LSI logic & bus logic mismatch.)

Solution

This error occurs when the originally specified bus type doesn't match the new bus type you are adding.

For example, a virtual machine is created with an LSI Logic bus on bus number 0, bus ID 0.  Like a physical machine, the virtual machine has assigned a slot to the hard drive.

If the hard drive is deleted, the bus type remains. Even if the hard drive on LSI Logic bus 0 is deleted, the bus is still LSI Logic. If you attempt to add a different drive, such as SCSI (BusLogic), you see the error message.

To fix this problem, choose a different bus number for the disk you are attempting to add.
