Access to Misconfigured Virtual Devices
Details
Solution
This problem is seen most often with a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me guest operating system. It is most often seen after some change in the virtual hardware. Sometimes this happens because of deliberate changes to the virtual machine's configuration. It can also happen when you upgrade your VMware software if the new version of the VMware software uses different virtual hardware. The error message indicates that two or more virtual devices are mapped to use the same range of memory addresses.
There are several possible workarounds. Try them one at a time until you find one that works for your particular virtual machine. We suggest that you try them in the order listed.
- Shut down the guest operating system and power off the virtual machine. In the virtual machine's working directory, find the file named nvram and delete it. Note that that any non-default BIOS settings (for example, boot order) are lost when you delete this file. You can restore those custom settings if you wish.
- As the virtual machine begins to boot, click inside the virtual machine window and press F2 to enter the BIOS setup screen. Be sure the floppy drive is enabled in the BIOS.
- Use the Virtual Machine Control Panel (in Workstation) or the Configuration Editor (in GSX Server) to remove the sound card from the virtual machine.
- Start the virtual machine in safe mode. While running in safe mode, reinstall VMware Tools.
