ESX Server 3.0.1, Patch ESX-9865995: Storage Array Update, Raise LVM Maximum Heap Size (9865995)

Details

Resolved Issues

This patch provides the following:
  • Fixes an issue for the HP MSA active/active storage array where an existing RDM LUN may become temporarily inaccessible in the guest upon storage processor failover.
  • Raises the LVM max heap size from 5MB to 32MB. The 5MB value allowed only about 70TB of storage to be addressed. Using a default maximum value of 32MB for the LVM heap size raises allows up to about 512TB to be addressed (the maximum number of LUNs per host is 256, and each LUN can be up to 2TB).

Solution

Applicability

This patch is for ESX Server 3.0.1 only.

This issue is resolved in ESX Server 3.0.2 and higher.

Installing the Patch

Download Instructions

Download and verify the patch bundle as follows:

  1. Log in to the ESX Server service console as root.

  2. Create a local depot directory.

    # mkdir /var/updates

Note: VMware recommends you use the /var/updates directory.

  3. Change your working directory to /var/updates.

    # cd /var/updates

  4. Download the tar file into this directory.

  5. Verify the integrity of the downloaded tar file:

    # md5sum ESX-9865995.tgz

The md5 checksum output should match the following:

    9223fe857d94a3bc4098a8c93b753be2 ESX-9865995.tgz

  6. Extract the compressed tar archive:

    # tar -xvzf ESX-9865995.tgz

  7. Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/ESX-9865995:

    # cd ESX-9865995

Installation Instructions

Note: All virtual machines on the host must be either shut down or migrated using VMotion before applying the patch. A reboot of the ESX Server host is required after applying this patch.

Once you have downloaded and extracted the archive, and if you are in the directory you created above, install the update using the following command:

# esxupdate update

If you want to run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:

# esxupdate -r file://<directory>/ESX-9865995 update

For example, if the host is called depot:

# esxupdate –r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-9865995 update

During the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below.

# esxupdate -v 10 -r file://<directory>/ESX-9865995 update

For more information on using esxupdate, refer to the Patch Management for ESX Server 3 tech note at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_esxupdate.pdf.
