Enabling Debug Mode in your GSX Server and Workstation Virtual Machines

Details

How and why do I enable debug mode for my virtual machine in VMware Workstation or VMware GSX Server?

Solution

At times, you may be asked by VMware Technical Support to provide the output of a DEBUG log file, which provides our support team with much more information than that found in a standard log file. This is most often requested by VMware Technical Support, and is usually only requested when there is a crash without an apparent root cause.

To enable debug mode for a virtual machine created with Workstation 4.5, 5.0, or GSX Server 3.1:

  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Choose VM > Settings > Options > Advanced.
  3. Select Run with debugging information.
  4. Save the settings and power on the virtual machine.

If you are using Workstation 4.0, the menu path is Edit > Virtual Machine Settings > Options > Advanced.

Important: Enabling debug mode will result in decreased performance when compared to a virtual machine running with regular logging. Unless instructed to do so by the VMware support team, please do not enable debug mode for your virtual machine.
