Virtual machine fails at bootup with the error: WORKER_THREAD_RETURNED_AT_BAD_IRQL (9110808)

Details

If you use P2V Assistant to reconfigure a virtual disk, which you later attach to a virtual machine, you may experience these symptoms:
  • The virtual machine fails at bootup.
  • You see the error: 

    STOP: 0x000000E1.... WORKER_THREAD_RETURNED_AT_BAD_IRQL

Solution

The issue can occur if IBM Director is installed in the Guest OS.
Perform the following steps to boot your virtual machine successfully:
  1. Boot the virtual machine into Safe Mode by pressing F5 on boot-up when you see the message Starting Windows....
  2. Uninstall IBM Director by going to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Locate the IBM Director software in Add or Remove Programs and click Change/Remove, following any necessary prompts.
  4. Reboot the virtual machine.
