VMotion Failure of Virtual Machines Located on LUSE LUNs on HP XP 10000 and 12000
Details
VMotion fails with virtual machines on VMFS3 volumes located on LUSE LUNs on HP XP 12000 and XP 10000 arrays.
Solution
Investigation attributes this issue to a SCSI-2 reservation failure.
To alleviate this problem, the following change is required in the storage array:
-
Minimum version of code = 50-09-78-00/00
-
Set Host Mode Option = 19 to ON (This is a Host Group Setting.)
- Host Mode = 0C (Windows) must be used for all VMware Host Groups
Host Mode Option is a setting on the storage array that customers cannot access. Please contact your HP representative to make the required change to the array configuration.
Note: SCSI-2 reservation conflict warnings will still be present. This is normal and expected because LUNs continue to be shared in a multi-initiator environment. Host Mode Option 19 I/O improvement will enable the host to retry commands with a greater probability of success.
If VMotion failed on ESX Server 3.0.x prior to changing the Host Mode Option, a stale virtual machine swap file may exist and can result in a VMotion failure even when a SCSI reservation was successful. In this case, shut down the virtual machine and delete the swap file manually.
