Error when powering on a migrated GSX Server virtual machine: Operating system not found

Details

I have a virtual machine which was running fine under GSX Server 1.x. After moving this virtual machine to a GSX Server 2.x installation, I get the error Operating System not found when trying to boot this virtual machine. What is wrong?

Solution

This can occur in a virtual machine that has both IDE and SCSI virtual disks, and the SCSI virtual disk is the boot disk.

To get this virtual machine to run under VMware GSX Server 2.x:
  1. Power on the virtual machine. Click inside the console window so the virtual machine grabs the mouse and keyboard.
  2. When the guest operating system starts to boot, press the F2 key to enter the virtual machine?s BIOS.
  3. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the Boot menu, then to select Hard Drive.
  4. Press Enter to expand the Hard Drive tree.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select the IDE disk, then press the minus (-) key to put the IDE disk after the SCSI disk in the boot order.
  6. Press F10 to save your change and exit the BIOS. The virtual machine continues to power on and the operating system should work correctly.
