Data Collection fails with error "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" on Windows NT

Details

  • Data collection on a remote server (target) running Windows NT fails with an error.
  • You receive the following error:

Not enough server storage is available to process this command

Note: This message is not due to a lack of storage space on the disk on the remote server. The storage mentioned in the error is in reference to a software buffer.

Solution

The error is generated when the IRPstackSize setting is too small. This issue usually affects Windows NT only.

To adjust the IRPstackSize see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/106167 .
Note: The preceding link was valid as of June 17/08. If you find the link to be broken, please provide feedback on the article and VMware employee will update the article.

The issue can also be caused by the machine having a non-zero PagedPoolSize in the registry.

To edit this:
  1. Log in to the remote server as the Administrator.
  2. Open regedit.exe .

Caution: Make a backup copy before making any changes to the registry.

  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management .
  4. Open the PagedPoolSize key and set to the value to 0.
  5. Restart the server.
Lastly, this error may be caused  if you installed Windows NT Service Pack 3 or better before installing any networking components. If this is the case, re-apply the last applied Service Pack, and any subsequent hotfixes.
