RPM Version Numbers from CD and Tarball Upgrades Don't Match

Details

While upgrading ESX Server version 2.x to 3.0.1 or later, I get different RPM version numbers depending on whether I upgrade from a tarball or CD. Why?

Solution

This is normal behavior. Depending on whether you upgrade your ESX Server system from a tarball or CD, you get the following RPM version numbers:

RPM Version Numbers from CD Upgrade
RPM Version Numbers from Tarball Upgrade
dosfstools-2.8-10 dosfstools-2.7-1
mailx-8.1.1-31.EL3 mailx-8.1.1-22
telnet-0.17-26.EL3.3 telnet-0.17-20.EL2.4
traceroute-1.4a12-20 traceroute-1.4a12-1
