Booting from RAW Disk Supported Only on IDE Drives

Details

What are the drive type limitations for booting an operating system on a RAW disk?

Solution

Booting a virtual machine from a SCSI raw disk is not supported. For more information, see Configuring Dual- or Multiple-Boot SCSI Systems to Run with VMware GSX Server or VMware Workstation.

For GSX Server 3.x:

www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/disks_dualscsi_gsx.html#1046391

For VMware Workstation 4.x:

www.vmware.com/support/ws45/doc/disks_dualmult_ws.html#1046324

For GSX Server 2.5.x:

www.vmware.com/support/gsx25/doc/disks_dual-boot_cfg_gsx.html

For GSX Server 2.0.x:

www.vmware.com/support/gsx2/doc/disks_dual-boot_cfg_gsx.html

For VMware Workstation 3.x:

www.vmware.com/support/ws3/doc/ws32_disks5.html

Booting a virtual machine from a raw disk is recommended only for expert users. Virtual disks are portable, perform well and are easier to use and implement.
