Error: "The device \\.\VMnet0 does not exist" on a Windows Server 2003 Host

Details

I installed VMware GSX Server 2.x on a Windows Server 2003 host and I see a message: "The device \\.\VMnet0 does not exist". What is wrong?

Solution

Although you can install and run VMware GSX Server 2.x on a Windows Server 2003 (formerly Windows .NET Server) host, you may see the error message "The device \\.\VMnet0 does not exist" with earlier builds of Windows .NET Server. This issue is resolved in the release candidate 1 build of Windows Server 2003.

To resolve this issue install the batch file InstNetwork.bat, which is included with VMware GSX Server. This batch file installs VMware network drivers for your host.

After you install VMware GSX Server, open a command prompt and type the following command:

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware GSX Server\InstNetwork.bat
