%HB Meter Displays an Incorrect Reading

Details

The %HB meter seems to be giving an incorrect reading for a virtual machine. What is wrong?

Solution

If you feel the %HB reading is giving you an inaccurate reading, please make sure the build number for VMware Tools matches the build number of VMware GSX Server.

Note: The heartbeat reading may be incorrect if the host or guest operating system are under heavy CPU loads or if the virtual machine was just powered on or resumed. Guest operating systems need some time to achieve a steady state.

To check the VMware Tools build version for a Windows guest operating system, in a console, open the VMware Tools control panel and look at the build number on the VMware Tools tab.

To check the VMware Tools build version for a Linux or FreeBSD guest operating system, in a console, open the VMware Tools control panel and choose Help > About to see build number.

If the build numbers don't match, you need to upgrade VMware Tools. Choose Settings > VMware Tools Install and follow the steps for Installing VMware Tools:
www.vmware.com/support/gsx25/doc/tools_install_gsx.html (GSX Server 2.5)
www.vmware.com/support/gsx2/doc/tools_install_gsx.html (GSX Server 2.0.x)
