Error: "vmware-serverd not running".

Details

On a Windows host, I get the error: "vmware-serverd not running". What is wrong?

Solution

This message means the VMware Registration Service is not running. You may see this message when you are using the VMware Management Interface or the VMware VmPerl API, starting a remote console, trying to register a virtual machine or when you start the local console and no registered virtual machines appear in the Virtual Machine Name list.

There is a known issue where an attempt to register a virtual machine that is already registered causes the VMware Registration Service to terminate.

On a Windows host, the service must be restarted manually. Open the Services window on your VMware GSX Server host (choose Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Services). Right-click the VMware Registration Service and choose Start. Restarting the VMware Registration Service does not require you to reboot the host.
