What are the steps for adding or removing storage and network PCI cards from an ESX Server 2.x host?

Solution

Whenever you add or remove storage and network PCI cards on an ESX Server system, it is important to follow these steps to ensure proper device allocation and to avoid boot failures:
  1. After installing or removing the storage or network PCI card, boot the ESX Server system into linux-up mode.
  2. Run:
    vmkpcidivy -i
    This ensures the kernel modules load properly.
  3. Reboot the ESX Server system.
