Boot Failure on a Windows NT 4.0 with SMP HAL

Details

I have a Windows NT 4.0 dual-boot setup on my host with a multiprocessor HAL. It does not boot in a virtual machine. What is wrong?

Solution

The uniprocessor environment of a virtual machine does not support the Windows NT Multiprocessor HAL. This is because during installation Windows NT installs a separate UP or MPS HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), depending on the hardware present. A Windows NT MPS HAL cannot run on a UP system.

It is possible to change a Windows NT 4.0 MPS HAL to a UP HAL, although this should only be attempted by very experienced Windows NT users. To switch Windows NT 4.0 between the UP and MPS HAL, refer to article Q156358 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. However, it may be easier to install a new separate copy of Windows NT within a virtual machine. If you do this, Windows NT automatically installs a UP HAL.
