Adjusting CPU Resources Through the Management Interface Fails for a Virtual Machine with a Slash Character in Its Display Name

Details

If you create a virtual machine with a slash (/) character in its Display Name parameter, such as the default suggestion for Linux virtual machines GNU/Linux, you might encounter errors when you adjust CPU resources for the virtual machine through the ESX Server system's management interface. In addition to the errors, the CPU resource parameters fail to update.

Error messages like these might appear:

SetCPUMax: Failed to change dynamic maximum CPU percentage for world 149.
Failed to set the maximum CPU percentage to 150 for world 149.
Please see the vmkernel log file /proc/vmware/log for more information.

SetCPUShares: Failed to change dynamic CPU shares for world 149.
Failed to set the number of CPU shares to 200 for world 149.
Please see the vmkernel log file /proc/vmware/log for more information.

Error messages like these might appear in /proc/vmware/log:

WARNING: CpuSched: 14878: affinity set contains only 1 pcpus, need at least 2 for SMP VM
WARNING: CpuSched: vm 149: 15122: invalid affinity specification ignored: all:3

Solution

On the management interface, change the Display Name parameter to some value without a slash character in it. For example, if you have a virtual machine with a display name of GNU/Linux, change the display name to GNULinux or Linux.
