RDM Virtual Machines Show as VMFS Virtual Machines After Being Migrated from ESX Server 2.x Hosts to ESX Server 3.0.1 Hosts Using VMotion (3461997)

Details

Why does a physical RDM virtual machine that I migrated from an ESX Server 2.x host to an ESX Server 3.0.x host using VMotion appear as a generic VMFS virtual machine?

Solution

When you migrate a physical RDM virtual machine from an ESX Server 2.x host to an ESX Server 3.0.x host using VMotion with datastore migration, the VI client displays this physical RDM as a generic VMFS virtual machine.

To resolve this problem, power off the virtual machine and upgrade the virtual hardware.
