Creating and Powering On a Virtual Machine Fails to Complete (3120175)

Details

I'm trying to create and power on a virtual machine. Why does this basic process fail to complete?

Solution

This process fails because the path name to the virtual machine is too long for the host agent to accept.

VirtualCenter now prevents users from creating virtual machine names that exceed the path name requirement. To resolve this issue, upgrade to VMware Server 1.0.

Do not create a virtual machine which has a path that exceeds 85 characters if you use all special characters. If you use special characters infrequently, then the path name can be around 200 characters.

If you exceed the length limitation, you are unable to create, deploy, or migrate a virtual machine.
