ESX 3.0.x virtual machines fail to perform DNS translation
Details
If you have an ESX 3.0.x host that is configured to use an external DNS server which is behind a firewall, you may experience these symptoms:
- The virtual machines do not perform DNS translation under any circumstances
- The ESX 3.0.x console can perform DNS translation
- The host-names are not resolved to host IP address
- The services, depending on hostname, do not resolve to IP addresses
- NSLOOKUP command fails to resolve hostname
- Unable to PING host by name
Solution
This may occur if you are using a Cisco PIX 520 version 5.2 firewall.
To resolve this issue, upgrade to PIX 520 version 6.3(5). For additional information about opening firewall TCP and UDP ports, see TCP and UDP Ports for vCenter Server, ESX hosts, and other network components management access (1012382).
