Incorrect Error Message When a Virtual Machine Backed Up on ESX Server 2.x is Restored to ESX Server 3.x

Details

I'm restoring a virtual machine that I backed up on ESX Server 2.x to ESX Server 3.x, and I get the following warning when powering on the virtual machine:

The disk connected to the scsiX:Y node has been created for a BusLogic
SCSI adapter, but the virtual machine's scsi0 device is a LSI Logic
SCSI adapter

Why do I see this message?

Solution

When you export an ESX Server system disk and the configuration file on ESX Server 2.x to the WorkStation format (2GBSparse), and then import the disk as well as the configuration file into ESX Server 3.0, you might get the error message:
The disk connected to the scsiX:Y node has been created for a BusLogic
SCSI adapter, but the virtual machine's scsi0 device is a LSI
Logic SCSI adapter.

You see this message because ESX Server 2.x didn't store the adapter type with the virtual disks. When an ESX Server 2.x virtual disk is exported to WorkStation format, the adapter type was hardcoded to Buslogic.

The message has no impact on the operation of the virtual machine. Click Yes to message post and ignore the message.
