I/O Stalls or Application Hangs on Virtual Machine Running on ESX Server 3.0 (2287)

Details

Under certain circumstances, a guest operating system might issue a command that is lost or delayed, causing I/O stalls or application freezes in the guest. The problem might become more apparent when using clustered applications like MSCS.

Solution

This problem can be resolved by setting a timeout value for commands on 2Gb QLogic adapters when using the QLogic 7.04 driver in ESX Server 3.0.

To configure the SCSI command timeout value on a 2Gb QLogic driver to 20 seconds
  1. Log in to the service console of the ESX Server system as root.

  2. Run the following commands:

    [root@esxhost]# esxcfg-module -s qla_cmd_timeout=20 qla2300_7xx.o

    [root@esxhost]# esxcfg-boot -b

  3. Reboot the ESX Server host.
