VMotion Fails When the Virtual Machine's Parallel Port Is Set to Write to an Output File (2284)

Details

Why does VMotion fail when migration is 90 percent complete when the virtual machine's parallel port is set to write to an output file?

Solution

Having a connected parallel port device configured to write to an output file on a datastore visible to the destination host does not prevent initiating VMotion for the virtual machine. VMotion fails, however, once it reaches 90 percent progress.

On VMware ESX Server 2.x destination systems, the error message is:
A general system error occured: failed tracking VMotion progress at destination (unknown exception).

On VMware ESX Server 3.x destination systems, the error message is:
A general system error occured: Multi-answer question encountered while resuming destination. Unable to proceed.

To work around this issue, disconnect the parallel port device before you initiate VMotion.
