Network Connectivity Is Lost and "WARNING: Uplink: 1925: Couldn't allocate pkt for frame copy" Appears in the Log

Details

Why is network connectivity lost when a network leaks undesirable packets?

Solution

Note: This issue is resolved in ESX Server 3.0.1.

When you use a network adapter without scatter or gather capability, a memory leak exists that can lead to the loss of network connectivity. The message WARNING: Uplink: 1925: Couldn't allocate pkt for frame copy appears in the log.

To the best of our knowledge, the following cards are vulnerable to this problem:

  • e1000 with PCI ID 0x1000
  • e100 with PCI *rev* ID less than 0x0c (that is 4, 5, 8, 9)
  • Some Broadcom 5700 network adapters

To work around this issue:

  1. Use the following command to increase the heap size:

    esxcfg-advcfg -k 16777216 netPktHeapMinSize

  2. Reboot the system.
