Windows 2003 SP1 System Stops Responding When I Mount Volumes

I'm running Windows 2003 SP1 or R2 as a guest operating system and have observed that the system stops responding during disk mounting operations. It also happens during volume mounting operations. What's wrong?

Solution

This issue has been observed occasionally in MSCS clustered configurations and rarely in non-clustered configurations. It is a known problem. Microsoft knowledge base article number 910048 covers this issue. It is characterized by the following error code:

STOP: 0x00000024

This problem occurs with the following Microsoft Windows versions:
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, used with:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86)

Other versions of Microsoft Windows do not cause this problem.
