Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0 64-Bit Guest Produces Error on Intel VT Host (2263)

Details

During installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0 x86-64 on a 64-bit capable (VT) Intel host, I'm getting the "Your CPU does not support longmode" message. Why does the installation fail?

Solution

This happens because Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0 x86-64 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0 x86-64 Update 1 do not support Intel 64-bit CPUs. See the release notes for Update 2 on the Red Hat Web site at www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/release-notes/as-amd64/RELEASE-NOTES-U2-x86_64-en.html.

Support for Intel EM64T has been added to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 2 x86-64 distribution. Intel processors with this technology are now supported, in addition to the previously supported AMD64 processors.

To avoid this problem, install Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update 2 or later.
