Configuring HA Task Fails or Virtual Machine Failover Does Not Happen (2259)

Details

Configuring HA fails. I'm using HA, but my virtual machine does not fail over. What is the issue?

Solution

VMware HA has a limit on the size of Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) or short host name. If the FQDN or the short host name is too long, virtual machine failover may not happen or configuring HA may fail.

Workaround

  • If the host short name is less than or equal to 29 characters, change the HOSTNAME entry in /etc/sysconfig/network to the shorter name.

  • If you are using an FQDN that is greater than 29 characters:
    1. Change the FQDN to less than or equal to 29 characters.
    2. Remove the existing cluster.
    3. Create a new cluster.
    4. Add all the hosts back to the cluster.

Note: ESX Server 3.0.1 and VirtualCenter 2.0.1 have a new FQDN limit of 255 characters. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1000064 for details.
