Upgrade of Legacy Templates Fails After Upgrading Shared LUN to VMFS-3 from Another Host

I have an ESX Server 3.0 host and an ESX Server 2.x host sharing a single LUN. After I upgrade the LUN from VMFS-2 to VMFS-3, I am unable to upgrade virtual machine templates. How can I upgrade the templates?

Solution

VMware recommends that you upgrade templates before you upgrade the shared LUN from VMFS-2 to VMFS-3. If this is not possible, upgrade the ESX Server 2.x host to ESX Server 3.0, and then upgrade the templates.
 
Note: This issue is fixed in ESX Server 3.0.1.
