64-Bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Stops Responding During Installation (2229)

Details

I'm installing 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 as a guest operating system. Near completion of the installation, the guest stops responding with a black screen. What is wrong?

Solution

On host machines with Intel EM64T VT-capable processors, you might see a black screen when completing installation of 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 as a guest operating system. This might happen after the guest operating system has been successfully installed and the X server begins to display a login screen.

Press Alt+F7 to redisplay the login screen. If this doesn't work, reset the virtual machine. The operating system should be completely installed and working properly.

Note: This issue is fixed in ESX Server 3.0.1.
