ESX Server 3.0 Does Not Properly Support Upgrading Multi-Boot Installations

Details

On a system with multiple copies of ESX Server installed, how can I be certain of upgrading the correct installation?

Solution

On a system with more than one copy of ESX Server installed, or where multiple installations are visible, such as on a SAN, the first installation encountered will be upgraded. While upgrading, take special care to choose the correct drive, master boot record (MBR), or SAN LUN on which to install/upgrade ESX Server. In the case where multiple installations exist on a SAN, you can also mask off the SAN LUNs corresponding to the installations that you do not currently want to upgrade.
