Installer Crashes During RPM Transaction While Upgrading ESX Server 2.x to 3.0

Details

While I was upgrading from ESX Server 2.x to ESX Server 3.0, the installer crashed during an RPM transaction. What is the cause of this, and how can I successfully upgrade my system?

Solution

The Security property on the ESX Server 2.x host is set to Low and this exposes a problem in Red Hat common code (rpmlib). Before upgrading, use the VMware Management Interface to set Security to High.
