Template Upgrades Do Not Work If the Host Is Running ESX Server 2.x

Why am I unable to upgrade my virtual machine templates on an ESX Server 2.x host?

Solution

Template upgrades must be completed only after ESX Server upgrades are complete. To upgrade a template:

  1. Upgrade the ESX Server host to version 3.0.
  2. Upgrade the VMFS volume on which the template resides to VMFS-3.
  3. Upgrade the legacy template.
