Virtual Machine Cannot Be Migrated with VMotion from ESX Server Version 2.x and 3.x (2155)

Can I use VMotion to migrate a virtual machine to a target server running ESX Server 2.5.3?

Solution

If you use VMotion to migrate a virtual machine to a target server running ESX Server version 2.5.3 or lower, VMotion might fail. The log file for the virtual machine shows Action added when prohibited (10871) as a VMware ESX Server unrecoverable error.

To avoid this problem, do one of the following:

  • Use VMXnet
  • Connect the virtual machine network adapter, and have network activity in the guest operating system.
