Cannot Install VirtualCenter Server with MSDE as Database (2153)

Details

Why does my installation of VirtualCenter server fail when I select the option to install and use a dedicated MSDE server instance?

Solution

If there is already a dedicated MSDE_VC database instance installed, installation of VirtualCenter server fails when you select the option to install and use a dedicated MSDE server instance.

If the MSDE_VC is already installed and the database has been created under it, the older database is not removed or overwritten.

To work around this problem, remove the MSDE_VC database:

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE_VC).
  3. Click Remove.
When you have removed the MSDE_VC database instance, repeat the VirtualCenter server installation.

If you are not able to remove the MSDE_VC database instance successfully using Add/Remove Programs, delete the VCDB.mdf and VCDB.ldf files under MSDE Install Folder\MSSQL$MSDE_VC\Data\.
