CPU Usage Statistics Display Incorrectly in VirtualCenter and Management Interface

Details

VirtualCenter and the VMware Management Interface report incorrect CPU usage statistics. For example, when I run loads to benchmark my virtual machines, the usage appears at zero percent. What is wrong?

Solution

This issue appears on host operating systems like SLES 9, NLD, and SUSE 9.1 that use kernels 2.6.0-2.6.8.1.

This issue also results in cumulative times that are unreliable.

There is no workaround for this issue except upgrading your system to kernel 2.6.9 or newer because, on older kernels, getrusage() does not provide correct results for processes using NPTL threads.
