Virtual Machine on ESX Server 2.0.2 Host Cannot Be Powered On Using VirtualCenter If Created Using VirtualCenter

Details

Why can't I power on a virtual machine I created using VirtualCenter? Also, why don't the parameters I specified get applied to a virtual machine I created using SDK client?

Solution

There is a known issue in ESX Server 2.0.2. If you use VirtualCenter to create a new virtual machine on an ESX Server 2.0.2 host, the virtual machine cannot be powered on using VirtualCenter. You need to power it on using the VMware Management Interface on the host. If you use SDK client to create a new virtual machine on an ESX Server 2.0.2 host, the virtual machine is created with default configuration parameters only and not with your specified ones. You need to update the virtual machine with your specified parameters using the management interface on the host.
