Virtual Machine Cloned Using P2V Assistant Crashes with a Blue Screen

Details

I reconfigured a virtual machine that I cloned using P2V Assistant. When I boot this reconfigured virtual machine, it crashes and displays one of the following error messages:
*** VMware ESX Server internal monitor error *** NOT_IMPLEMENTED at 2263 (16390)
Stop 0x0000007B
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

How do I resolve this boot failure?

Solution

Some blue screen crashes are caused by system management agents running in the virtual machine (for example, HP Insight Management agents, Dell OpenManage, or IBM Director).

If the source machine that you cloned had system management agents installed and running, attempt to boot the cloned virtual machine into Windows safe mode. If the virtual machine boots into Windows safe mode:

  1. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services and disable or stop all system management agents.
  2. After disabling these services, power off the virtual machine.
  3. Power on the virtual machine.

Note: If the services do not show up in Administrative Tools > Services (for example, Dell OpenManage Disk Management), you can remove them using Add/Remove Programs (under the Start menu > Control Panel).

If the system crashes and displays Stop 0x0000007B or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, check which SCSI driver the virtual machine is using. If the virtual machine is using the LSI Logic driver, change it to use the BusLogic driver.

To check what SCSI driver the virtual machine is using and edit it for ESX Server:

  1. Log on to the ESX Server management interface.
  2. Double-click the virtual machine.
  3. Click Hardware > SCSI Controller.
  4. Click Edit to change the driver to BusLogic.
  5. Power on the virtual machine again. It should not crash.
