ESX Server 3.0.1, Patch ESX-2066306: Kernel Crashes on AMD Hosts and Some Virtual Machines Crash During Migration

Details

Resolved Issues

This patch addresses the following issues:

  • Virtual machines experiencing high CPU load during a VMotion migration can hang after the migration is complete.
  • Virtual machines can crash during a NUMA migration due to memory allocation failures.
  • Kernel memory can become corrupted, resulting in a kernel crash when using 64-bit guest operating systems in virtual machines on ESX Server hosts with AMD processors.
  • Adds support for using Microsoft Clustering Server (MSCS) with Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and R2 Guest Operating Systems. (For more information, view KB 2021.)

Solution

Applicability

This patch is for ESX Server 3.0.1 only.

Installing the Patch

Download Instructions

Download and verify the patch bundle as follows:

  1. Log into the ESX Server service console as root.
  2. Create a local depot directory.

    # mkdir /var/updates

Note: VMware recommends you use the updates directory.
  3. Change your working directory to /var/updates.

    # cd /var/updates
  4. Download the tar file into the /var/updates directory.
  5. Verify the integrity of the downloaded tar file.

    # md5sum ESX-2066306.tgz

The md5 checksum output should match the following:

    2b8a9a6d9beb82476e1a7e8eafbb18d7 ESX-2066306.tgz

  6. Extract the compressed tar archive.

    # tar -xvzf ESX-2066306.tgz
  7. Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/ESX-2066306.

    # cd ESX-2066306

Installation Instructions

Once you have downloaded and extracted the archive, and if you are in the directory you created above, install the update by using the following command:

# esxupdate update

If you want to run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:

# esxupdate -r file://<directory>/ESX-2066306 update

For example, if the host is called depot:

# esxupdate –r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-2066306 update

During the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below:

# esxupdate -v 10 -r file://<directory>/ESX-2066306 update

For more information on using esxupdate, refer to the Patch Management for ESX Server 3 tech note at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_esxupdate.pdf.
