Importing virtual machines into VMware vRealize Automation fails and the virtual machines are deleted (2066200)

Symptoms

In environments running customized installs of VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server):
  • Attempting to import virtual machines into VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server) fails
  • Virtual machines that were being imported are deleted

Cause

This issue occurs when the workflow fails and does not handle machine registration correctly. Instead of sending the master workflow to a Finalized state, it sends it to the UnprovisionMachine state, which eventually results in the Disposing state, and the virtual machine is finally disposed.

Note: This issue only occurs in environments running customized installs of VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server).

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server) 5.1, 5.2, and 6.0.

To resolve this issue for a VMware vRealize Automation 6.0 environment, upgrade to VMware vRealize Automation 6.0.1.

If your VMware vRealize Automation 5.1 or 5.2 environment is experiencing this issue, file a support request with VMware Technical Support and note this Knowledge Base article ID (2066200) in the problem description. For more information on filing a Support Request, see Filing a Support Request in My VMware (2006985).

Impact/Risks

This issue may cause running production virtual machines to be deleted in vSphere as an unintended result of attempting to import them into VMware vRealize Automation (formerly known as VMware vCloud Automation Center for Server). Virtual machines deleted in this way must be restored from backup.
