Limitations to Using SRM with Array-Based Replication in Large-Scale Environments (2059498)

If you have a large-scale SRM environment, that involves between 50 to 255 Fibre Channel LUNs, and if you run recovery on more than 50 LUNs simultaneously, you might notice recovery timeouts, errors, and failures related to the LUNs and in some cases to the virtual machines. In some cases, you might have to run the recovery plan multiple times before it succeeds. This occurs whether you are protecting the LUNs in a single recovery plan or in multiple recovery plans.

The number of LUNs that you protect matters as well as the number of protection groups. More commands are issued with a greater number of protection groups, leading to more delays.

Apply these guidelines when you use SRM with array-based replication:
  • Install ESXi 5.5, Patch Release ESXi550-201312001 or ESXi 5.1, Patch Release ESXi510-201310401 respectively. These patches enable you to recover up to 255 LUNs in a single recovery plan.
    For full details, see:
    VMware ESXi 5.5, Patch Release ESXi550-201312001 (2063795)
    VMware ESXi 5.1, Patch Release ESXi510-201310001 (2053402)

  • In a Fibre Channel SAN setup that uses an EMC VNX storage array and an SRM compatible VNX storage replication adapter (SRA), increase the density of LUNs per SRM protection group. Increasing the density of LUNs per protection group helps to improve the total recovery time. For example, if you have 50 LUNs, instead of having 50 protection groups that each contains 1 LUN, create 10 protection groups that each contains 5 LUNs. See  SRM Performance is Slow with EMC VNX 5700 Storage (2058987).
After recovery and reprotect operations have completed, manually log into the console of the array on the protected site and delete any read-only storage groups.
The above issues do not affect large-scale SRM environments that use vSphere Replication.
